We founded Perfect Day in 2014 with a mission to create a kinder, tomorrow by developing new ways to make the foods we all love today — starting in the dairy aisle. Through the rollercoaster of the past year, we’ve seen more clearly than ever that we can’t get there alone. That’s why we’re excited to launch our Medium page, created to bring our community on this journey with us. We’ll share our perspective on major moments and our point of view on the opportunities and challenges we’re facing. If you’re already following along on our social channels (Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook) or learning from our Knowledge Base, thank you! This isn’t meant to replace those conversations but instead to serve as an additional place to deepen your dialogue with us, and hear who we are even more candidly.

(Re)Introducing Ourselves

In this first post, we want to introduce ourselves by telling you who we strive to be every day. Last year, after a period of incredible growth, we put words around what we collectively felt was the “what” behind our expanding team. We shared our mission, vision, and values internally at Perfect Day to give meaning and direction to the incredible work our now nearly 200 employees do every single day. Our mission and vision are:

Our mission is change the process, not the food: to create a kinder, greener tomorrow by developing new ways to make the foods you love today — starting in the dairy aisle.

Our vision is strengthen the system: to build a more equitable, resilient, and diverse food system for all of us.

Our CEO, Ryan Pandya, made it clear that these could not end up as just corporate rhetoric, but should instead be meaningful guides against which we track our progress. Two weeks ago, we shared an action which we believe drives us towards that commitment.

Kinder, Greener

We shared the results of an ISO-certified, third-party validated life cycle assessment of the greenhouse gas emissions from our animal-free whey protein production process. If we’re going to strive for kinder, greener, we wanted to understand what our environmental impact is now and how we can be an even better steward of our planet. And we wanted to share our results so that our community can hold us accountable to taking action based on the results.

The study found that Perfect Day’s whey protein production produces up to 97% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional production methods. We’re incredibly proud of those results. But the work can’t and won’t stop there. We believe the right approach to tackling climate change is twofold: further improve our production process and work with more partners to make sustainable dairy a reality. That means using the results of our LCA to always be sustainability leaders, and not settling for anything less than 100% better. And it also means working with leaders in the dairy industry to meet consumer demand for kinder, greener products. A dairy aisle where even just 5% of the cheese, milk, ice cream, cream cheese — you name it — was made just as delicious with Perfect Day means we’ve saved 12.3 million metric tons of GHG emissions — equivalent to the carbon emitted from every single car registered in the city of Los Angeles. That’s a massive impact, and it’s within reach.

Better Together

This week, Fast Company named among the winners of their annual World Changing Ideas award. We don’t take that title lightly. What the award and our LCA results underscored for us is that our work is significant, and its urgent. We need to accelerate our impact, and we can only do that if we build a community which challenges and supports us.

With that in mind, we’ve also created a Sustainability & Health Advisory Council of problem-solvers and expert guides on the issues that are the at the core of who we are. The incredible founding members will share their expertise on the best ways to tackle health and wellness, the environment, animal welfare’s impact on the food system, cultural matters surrounding alternative proteins, and more.

We ask this Council, our Board, our people, and all our advisors to hold us accountable to making sure our business and global impact always go hand-in-hand. We hope that all of you here on our Medium page will join them. Thank you for coming along on this ride with us, and for sharing our vision of a more equitable, resilient, and diverse food system for all of us.
